Boston Mayor Michelle Wu entered a high-stakes Republican-led Congressional hearing while holding her baby daughter, who became a star of sorts in the day’s proceedings, where she was mentioned by federal lawmakers on several occasions.
03/05/2025 --dailykos
House Republicans held a hearing on Wednesday to attack cities led by Democratic mayors for not adopting President Donald Trump’s hard line on immigration. But the mayors fought back against the GOP narrative during the contentious session of the House Oversight Committee. The loaded title of the event was “A Hearing with Sanctuary City Mayors,” reflecting the built-in hostility from Chairman James Comer, who has spent the last few years using the committee to pursue anti-Joe Biden conspiracies that fizzled out.Republicans have often argued that cities like Boston and Denver are run as “sanctuary cities” with lax immigration policies that have led to crime (even though crime is down in recent years), though it’s important to note that there is no strict definition of a sanctuary city.Tom Homan, who Donald Trump appointed as his “border czar” recently took a break from complaining about Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to announce he planned to bring “hell” to Boston in retaliation for their immigration stance.xxYouTube Video“Shame on him for lying about my city, for having the nerve to insult our police commissioner, who has overseen the safest Boston’s been in anyone’s lifetime,” Boston Mayor Michelle Wu told the committee.“Bring him here under oath, and let’s ask him some questions. I’m here to make sure that the city of Boston is safe. Others may want to bring hell, we are here to bring peace to cities everywhere.”Wu’s opening remarks highlighted Boston’s diversity, noting that 28% of the iconic city’s 700,000 residents are immigrants and that students in Boston Public Schools hail from more than 139 different countries. Wu explained that there were 24 homicides recorded in Boston in 2024, the lowest number since 1957.In another exchange, Rep. Jim Jordan (a key Trump ally) complained that Denver Mayor Mike Johnston was purportedly being soft on crime and providing sanctuary to gang members. As he yelled at the mayor, Johnston patiently explained that the city was following its ordinances and that he has reached out to the Immigrations and Customs Enforcement agency to improve coordination. Jordan continued to rant about the topic, insisting that Denver is operating as a “sanctuary city.”New York Mayor Eric AdamsBut the bullying began before the Oversight meeting as Republican Rep. Anna Paulina Luna of Florida informed Wu, Johnston, New York City Mayor Eric Adams, and Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson that she was going to “criminally refer them to the Department of Justice for upholding sanctuary city policies,” The Hill reported.“You all speak about a broken immigration system and yet here you guys are aiding and abetting in that entire process.” Adams was the only mayor praised for his work with ICE. Then again, controversy has swirled around the mayor as Trump’s DOJ moved to dismiss corruption charges against him, apparently in exchange for his cooperation on Trump’s hard-line anti-immigration agenda. For years Republicans have sought to demonize migrants, and especially under the leadership of Trump, the GOP has gone all-in on bigoted anti-immigration ideas and rhetoric. Instead of exploring solutions on the contentious topic, the Oversight hearing sought to attack Democrats for not going along with the right’s invective. But the mayors stood their ground despite the attempted ambush.Trump calls himself a king. But we know we are not a nation of kings—and we never will be. Get your Daily Kos T-shirt or hat to spread the message and wear it with pride: No Kings.

During a hearing of the House Oversight Committee on Tuesday, Republican Rep. Nancy Mace threatened to fight Democratic Rep. Jasmine Crockett after she called out Mace for anti-transgender bigotry.Crockett was attempting to get the committee to reinstate its subcommittee on civil rights when she took note of Mace’s recent anti-trans rhetoric and promotion of bills meant to restrict transgender rights.“Somebody’s campaign coffers really are struggling right now. So [Mace] gonna keep saying ‘trans, trans, trans’ so that people will feel threatened, and child, listen—” Crockett said.Mace interjected, saying, “I am no child, do not call me a child, I am no child,” then told Crockett, “If you want to take it outside, we can do that.”xxYouTube VideoDemocratic Rep. Maxwell Frost objected to the call for violence, but Oversight Chair James Comer, a Republican, ruled that the threat could merely have meant going outside to “have a cup of coffee or perhaps a beer.”Following the incident, Mace posted about it on social media at least a dozen times but claimed that her response to Crockett was not about instigating a fight.“Please explain to me how the same damn Karen that called Cap[itol] Police on a child who shook her hand wanted to act like she wanted to fight me?!” Crockett wrote. “Republicans incite violence from the highest levels of government & ALSO claim to be the party of law & order. The two cannot be true! Do yourself a favor, decide to require better of your electeds. Last I checked, threatening members in a committee room doesn’t exactly reduce the cost of eggs.”Mace has been widely criticized for pushing House Republican leadership to adopt a rule that prevents transgender members of the House from using a restroom corresponding to their gender identity. The adoption of the rule followed the successful election of Rep. Sarah McBride, the first (and so far only) openly transgender member of Congress. After being criticized for her bigoted stance, Mace has spent months attacking transgender people. A recent fundraising text for Mace alleged that a “Trans Mob” wanted to kill her. The comment from Crockett comes as the Republican-led House passed legislation to ban transgender girls from participating in girls’ sports at schools that receive funding from the federal government. The bill also changes federal law to say “sex shall be recognized based solely on a person’s reproductive biology and genetics at birth.”Republicans pushed the bill through—only two Democrats supported it, and no Republicans opposed it—even as concerns have been raised that it would empower predators.“The House Republican Child Predator Empowerment Act does not promote fairness and safety in sports,” House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries wrote. “It will unleash horrific child predators on girls and young women throughout America. Unacceptable.”Frost noted that if the Republican bill became law, it would allow young children to be subjected to invasive questions about their genitals from strangers and that inspections could occur without parents present.“We must protect children. This bill is disgusting and puts every girl in this country at risk,” he wrote.Republicans, led by Donald Trump, have attacked transgender rights as a unifying rallying cry for bigots to support the party’s candidates at the polls.Campaign Action

Rep. Nancy Mace, R-S.C., and Rep. Jasmine Crockett, D-Texas, got into a heated exchange at a House hearing Tuesday that culminated with Mace challenging Crockett by asking whether she wanted to “take it outside.”The war of words came during a discussion of civil rights and transgender rights, with Crockett calling for re-establishing a subcommittee on civil rights and criticizing Mace’s rhetoric about transgender people.“I can see that somebody’s campaign coffers really are struggling right now. So [Mace] is gonna keep saying ‘trans, trans, trans, trans’ so that people will feel threatened, and child, listen —” Crockett said.“I am no child, do not call me a child, I am no child,” Mace interjected, prompting committee chair James Comer, R-Ky., to unsuccessfully call for order.“If you want to take it outside, we can do that,” Mace said, addressing Crockett.Rep. Maxwell Frost, D-Fla., tried to defend Crockett, saying Mace had incited violence against her. After some discussion, Comer ruled that Mace’s remark had not been a call to violence, saying she could have been asking Crockett to go outside to “have a cup of coffee or perhaps a beer.”Spokespeople for Mace and Crockett did not immediately respond to requests for comment Tuesday night. The two took to X, however, to defend themselves.Mace posted about the incident upward of a dozen times, acknowledging that she went “off” on Crockett but saying her call to go outside was not intended to mean she wanted to fight.“Let me be clear: I wanted to take the conversation off the floor to have a more constructive conversation, not to fight. At no point was there any intention of causing harm to anyone,” she wrote in one post.Crockett said on X that she had been threatened, and she called Mace “an attention seeking loser.”“Last I checked, threatening members in a committee room doesn’t exactly reduce the cost of eggs,” she wrote.Mace in recent months has become known for her actions toward transgender people. Following the election of the first openly transgender member of Congress, Rep. Sarah McBride, D-Del. , Mace introduced a measure banning transgender women from female bathrooms on Capitol Hill. Mace later said the resolution was “absolutely” meant to target McBride, and she has since visited her district to speak to the state’s Republican Party about the measure. The House Oversight Committee room where Tuesday’s exchange took place was also the site of a meeting last year that devolved into chaos amid personal insults. In May, a hearing imploded after Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., responded to a question from Crockett by saying, “I think your fake eyelashes are messing up what you’re reading.”When Comer ruled that Greene’s words had not violated the committee’s rules, Crockett asked: “I’m just curious, just to better understand your ruling. If someone on this committee then starts talking about somebody’s bleach blond, bad-built butch body, that would not be engaging in personalities, correct?”This story first appeared on NBCNews.com. Republicans are sucking up to Donald Trump in the best way they know how: by being spineless cowards. The convicted felon has promised that when he takes office in January, he will pardon Jan. 6 insurrectionists and called for lawmakers who investigated the attempted coup to be punished. And GOP senators and Congress members, most of whom were hunkered down in the Capitol on that terrible day, are lining up to roll over for him. “As we found from Hunter Biden, the president’s pardon authority is pretty extensive. That’s obviously a decision he’ll have to make,” incoming Senate Majority Leader John Thune told The Hill about Trump’s promised pardons. While he plans to let the rioters off scot-free, Trump recently told “Meet the Press” host Kristen Welker that former Rep. Liz Cheney and other members of the Jan. 6 committee should “go to jail.” “I don’t have a comment really on those statements,” Thune said.Thune’s timorous stance on pardoning the rioters was parroted by fellow Republican senators.

As the pearl-clutching continues over President Joe Biden’s Sunday pardon of his son Hunter, House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer said on Monday that he hopes to work with Donald Trump’s incoming Department of Justice to initiate new investigations into the Biden family and Hunter Biden’s laptop.Appearing on Newsmax’s “Rob Schmitt Tonight,” Comer was asked how Biden’s decision to pardon his son would affect his future plans.“I look forward to talking to Attorney General Bondi about this,” the Kentucky Republican said, referencing Trump attorney general nominee Pam Bondi, who still has to be confirmed by the Senate.Without evidence, Comer went on to allege that the Biden White House is continuing to obstruct investigations into the Biden family.
