Democratic lawmakers wouldn't provide a definition for "woman" in a new video as President Donald Trump focuses his second term on declaring the difference between the two biological sexes.
03/05/2025 --dailykos
President Donald Trump's first address to a joint session of Congress Tuesday night alternated between chaotic and boring, while also being predictably boastful and filled with outright lies.In attendance were federal workers who have been laid off by Elon Musk and his so-called Department of Government Efficiency, as well as random right-wing influencers like pundit Ben Shapiro, professional transphobe Riley Gaines—and Musk himself, who elicited stony silence from the Democrats in the audience and cloying adoration from the Republicans present. The havoc kicked off early when Rep. Melanie Stansbury of New Mexico held up a sign as Trump entered the chamber and walked down the aisle. The piece of paper she held read: “This is not normal.” GOP Rep. Lance Gooden of Texas kept it classy when he reached across the aisle, ripped the paper out of her hands, and waved it above his head in triumph.xxYouTube VideoTrump began the speech by throwing out some polling numbers—with zero context. “Now, for the first time in modern history, more Americans believe that our country is headed in the RIGHT direction than the WRONG direction—an astonishing record 27-point swing since Election Day alone,” Trump claimed. Considering that Trump’s approval ratings have steadily declined since he took office while his disapproval ratings have increased, it’s a classic Trump lie/boast. And according to RealClear politics, while an increasing number of people believe we are going in the right direction, the majority of Americans still believe we are on the wrong track. As Trump began asserting that voters gave him a mandate, Democratic Rep. Al Green of Texas rose up in protest, yelling that Trump had no “mandate.” Bullies don’t like confrontation, and a seemingly shaken Speaker Mike Johnson ordered Green removed from the chamber.Trump proceeded to brag about all of his disastrous moves so far, like renaming the Gulf of Mexico; pulling the U.S. out of climate agreements; making English our “official” language; and getting rid of whatever he believes “woke” is. And two minutes after Green was removed from the chambers for voicing his opinion, Trump announced, "I've brought back free speech."“Joe Biden especially let the price of EGGS get out of control,” Trump shouted, then proceeded to blame Biden for just about everything before promising to “drill baby drill.”Trump then got around to introducing the world’s richest unelected bureaucrat: his co-President Musk. He listed off a slew of supposed savings and waste that Musk and his unvetted DOGE stooges have found. Chances are very high that 99% of the “savings” Trump bragged about are wildly inaccurate descriptions or completely fabricated.xThis is almost laughable.Trump is the one who let an unelected billionaire bring the swamp of corruption right to the White House.Elon Musk is the unelected bureaucrat who must go. #JointAddress[image or embed]— Congresswoman Robin Kelly (@robinkelly.house.gov) March 4, 2025 at 7:11 PMSen. Elizabeth Warren and the rest of us can agree with Trump on one thing, for sure.xI agree with Donald Trump that an unelected bureaucrat should be fired. Let’s start with Elon Musk.— Elizabeth Warren (@warren.senate.gov) March 4, 2025 at 7:11 PMTrump then began rambling about the “millions” of mythical elderly people stealing from Social Security in a factually barren attack on the very popular program that assures senior citizens won’t live in poverty. It was standard rhetoric for Trump and the GOP, who want to gut the program in order to fund tax breaks for the rich—and ultimately privatize the system entirely.Trump then promised those huge tax cuts, and Rep. Rashida Tlaib of Michigan expressed what so many of us were thinking.xTrump just promised to cut taxes for everyone, but we all know he just wants to pass tax cuts for himself and his billionaire broligarchs so he can keep avoiding paying his fair share.[image or embed]— Democratic Socialists of America (@demsocialists.bsky.social) March 4, 2025 at 7:12 PMThen Trump addressed his disastrous tariffs on China, Canada, and Mexico, and his strategy seems very serious and not at all petty. “Whatever they tariff us, we tariff them. Whatever they tax us, we tax them,” Trump promised. That’s sure to help accomplish his promise to bring “relief to working families.” Sane viewers weren’t the only ones who needed a break from Trump’s BS, as some Democrats walked out of the speech in protest. xWe just walked out of the state of the Union. My shirt showed Trump an important message: NO KINGS LIVE HERE. In the spirit of student protestors from the Civil Rights Movement, I’m proud to have protested and walked out with many of my colleagues. This is NOT a normal time.[image or embed]— Maxwell Frost (@maxwellfrost.bsky.social) March 4, 2025 at 6:52 PMTrump’s speech dragged when he started spouting numbers and his droning prompted Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to write, “This list is so long and taking up so much real estate in his speech it’s almost like they want to distract from their massive cuts to Medicaid.”xThis list is so long and taking up so much real estate in his speech it’s almost like they want to distract from their massive cuts to Medicaid— Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (@aoc.bsky.social) March 4, 2025 at 6:47 PMIn a nod to his cheesy reality TV roots, Trump used his crypto-stoolie Vice President JD Vance as a prop when signing an executive order honoring a 12-year-old girl who was allegedly killed by undocumented immigrants.xxYouTube VideoThen it was time for Trump to pretend he supports law enforcement, so he promised to pass a law that would make the death penalty the mandatory sentence for killing a police officer. “We have to take care of our law enforcement,” Trump told Congress. This is the same convicted felon who pardoned 1,500 criminals—many of whom were convicted of attacking law enforcement officers at the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.x#GVerse via @mmpadellan.bsky.social "We have to take care of our law enforcement..."says guy who pardoned January 6th attackers who assaulted cops[image or embed]— Gaetano (@gmf1369.bsky.social) March 4, 2025 at 7:19 PMFormer Capitol Police Officer Harry Dunn spoke for all of us.xDude says we have to take care of our law enforcement FUCK YOU!!! YOU ASSHOLE YOU PARDONED OUR ATTACKERS— Harry Dunn (@libradunn1.bsky.social) March 4, 2025 at 7:10 PMTrump wrapped up the record-long speech by boasting that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy wants to sign the deal that Zelenskyy was reportedly ready to sign before Trump and Vance decided to perform an embarrassing bully act in the Oval Office. He forgot to mention how he has spinelessly folded to Russian President Vladimir Putin and restricted U.S. military aid to Ukraine. The temperamental tyrant then lashed out at Democratic Sen. Elizabeth Warren, calling her “Pocahontas” in a strange moment of nastiness.xxYouTube VideoTime really drags during a Trump administration, and his speech truly felt like 100 years of boring blather. Freedom Caucus extraordinaire Rep. Chip Roy has found himself in Donald Trump’s crosshairs after the Texas Republican balked at raising the debt limit, as part of a bipartisan spending bill to avert a GOP-created government shutdown.“The very unpopular ‘Congressman’ from Texas, Chip Roy, is getting in the way, as usual, of having yet another Great Republican Victory - All for the sake of some cheap publicity for himself,” Trump wrote on Truth Social on Thursday. “... Weak and ineffective people like Chip have to be dismissed as being utterly unknowledgeable as to the ways of politics, and as to Making America Great Again.”“Chip Roy is just another ambitious guy, with no talent. By the way, how’s Bob Good doing? I hope some talented challengers are getting ready in the Great State of Texas to go after Chip in the Primary. He won’t have a chance!” Trump added in a separate post.Rep. Good, the former chair of the Freedom Caucus, lost his primary to state Sen. John McGuire, who was endorsed by Trump after showing fealty to him during his New York trial. Trump supporters subsequently treated Good like a pariah, who was even thrown out of a Trump store while campaigning.“My position is simple - I am not going to raise or suspend the debt ceiling (racking up more debt) without significant & real spending cuts attached to it,” Roy responded on X, tagging Trump, the Freedom Caucus, and the soon-to-be Republican Majority Leader Sen. John Thune. “I’ve been negotiating to that end. No apologies.”When asked about Trump’s threats, Roy told reporters that “we're working right now on how to actually cut spending, which is what the voters sent me to Washington to do.”Roy has frequently made headlines along with other right-wing lawmakers prone to histrionics. He was recorded saying that the best strategy for Republicans under the Biden administration is to create “chaos and the inability to get stuff done.”In 2023, Roy clashed with fellow chaos agent Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia after he voted against her racist attempt to censure Democratic Rep. Rashida Tlaib of Michigan for her pro-Palestinian statements (Tlaib is a Michigan native born to Palestinian immigrants). The two later made up, appearing together in March at a ludicrous forced-birther symposium to fear monger about harvested baby parts. However, Roy’s original sin could simply be that he was one of only a handful of Republicans who challenged their fellow lawmakers’ attempts to overthrow the 2020 election results. In Trump’s feud with Roy, it’s hard to choose a side when they’re both covered in pig shit and mud.You can help ensure that Daily Kos remains the home for our shared fight for democracy and justice. Two senators are pushing a bipartisan bill, opposed by the "Squad," that would ban immigrants involved in the Oct. 7 attack on Israel; it is expected to pass.
11/13/2024 --rawstory
Legislation that would have handed President-elect Donald Trump sweeping power to investigate and shutter news outlets, government watchdogs, humanitarian organizations, and other nonprofits was defeated in the House of Representatives on Tuesday after a coalition of progressive advocacy groups and lawmakers mobilized against it, warning of the bill's dire implications for the right to dissent. But 52 Democratic lawmakers—including Reps. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.), Henry Cuellar (D-Texas), and Ritchie Torres (D-N.Y.)—apparently did not share the grave concerns expressed by the ACLU and other leading rights groups, opting to vote alongside 204 Republicans in favor of the bill. One Republican, Rep. Thomas Massie of Kentucky, joined 144 Democrats in voting no.The measure ultimately fell short of the two-thirds majority needed to approve legislation under the fast-track procedure used by the bill's supporters, but progressives wasted no time spotlighting the Democrats who supported the measure."If you're looking for a handy list of Democrats who have no fucking clue what is about to hit and need their spines stiffened ASAP, this is a good place to start," wrote Leah Greenberg, co-executive director of the advocacy group Indivisible.Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.), who vocally opposed the legislation, wrote that "these 52 Democrats voted to give Trump the power to shut down any nonprofit he wants.""The NAACP, ACLU, Planned Parenthood, no organization would be safe," Tlaib added. "Shameful."If passed, the Stop Terror-Financing and Tax Penalties on American Hostages Act would grant the Treasury Department—soon to be under the control of a Trump nominee—the authority to unilaterally strip nonprofits of their tax-exempt status by deeming them supporters of terrorism. The bill could be revived in the next Congress, which is likely to be under full Republican control.Kia Hamadanchy, senior policy counsel with the ACLU, toldThe Intercept late Tuesday that "we will continue our sustained opposition."It is already illegal under U.S. law to provide material backing for terrorism, and the executive branch has significant authority to target groups it considers terrorist-supporting."This isn't just an attack on our communities; it's a fundamental threat to free speech and democracy."The ACLU noted ahead of Tuesday's vote that while the bill contains "a 90-day 'cure' period in which a designated nonprofit can mount a defense, it is a mere illusion of due process.""The government may deny organizations its reasons and evidence against them, leaving the nonprofit unable to rebut allegations," the group said. "This means that a nonprofit could be left entirely in the dark about what conduct the government believes qualifies as 'support,' making it virtually impossible to clear its name."Opponents of the bill warned that Palestinian rights organizations would be uniquely imperiled if it passed."This bill dangerously weaponizes the Treasury against nonprofit organizations and houses of worship—Christian, Jewish, or Muslim—that dare to support Palestinian and Lebanese human rights or criticize Israel's genocidal actions," said Robert McCaw, director of government affairs at the Council on American-Islamic Relations."Allowing such sweeping, unchecked power would set a chilling precedent, enabling the government to selectively target and suppress voices of dissent under the guise of national security," McCaw added. "This isn't just an attack on our communities; it's a fundamental threat to free speech and democracy."Georgia State Rep. Ruwa Romman (D-97), a Palestinian American, echoed that sentiment following Tuesday's vote and condemned the legislation's 52 Democratic supporters."Every single Democrat who voted for this is not taking the threat of Trump remotely seriously and should be disqualified from any leadership positions moving forward," Romman wrote on social media. "This is no longer business as usual. To agree to give him this kind of power is beyond egregious."

Republican U.S. Senate candidate Kari Lake blamed "absurd partisan polls" after trailing in her Arizona race.During a Sunday interview on NewsNation, host Chris Stirewalt noted that Lake had trailed Rep. Ruben Gallego (D-AZ) since the beginning of the race."You came within three-quarters of a point of winning the governorship just two years ago," Stirewalt explained. "After a long career as a very popular TV anchor in Phoenix, you entered this Senate race as a household name in your state.""You have the backing of the former president and the Republican establishment in the Senate, but in most polls since the beginning of the contest, you have trailed Congressman Gallego," the host said. "That was the average of polls from our partners at The Hill and Decision Desk HQ, showing you trailing by nearly six points. How do we account for this? How do you explain that?"Lake suggested that her internal polling showed her ahead."Well, there were a couple of really bad outlier polls that were included in that that were just absolutely absurd, partisan polls," she complained. "I know what my internal polling looks like."I'm ahead of him, but it is a horse race," she continued. "And I've gotten access to a lot of polls that aren't public.""We are the third best chance for a pickup seat in these closely contested races. And I feel we're going to win this one."ALSO READ: Donald Trump exploits AP photo error for new $99 'Save America' bookLake accused the media of "pushing a false narrative" about Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris."They've got a dud candidate who didn't earn a single vote," she insisted. Donald Trump's highly publicized visit to Arizona on Thursday, to tout the border wall his administration built, was called out as a fraud by one of his own supporters who has a ranch in the area.In an interview with the Washington Post. rancher John Ladd, "a Trump supporter whose ranch extends along the border," explained the photo-op where the former president boasted about his accomplishments at stopping immigrants from crossing over into the U.S. was in front of a section of wall built under President Barack Obama's administration. The former president has made the border crisis a central plank of his re-election bid, accusing President Joe Biden— and by extension Vice President Kamala Harris — of falling down on the job.ALSO READ: Trump is losing his audienceThe only problem, the Post is reporting is that Trump's advance people placed him in front of a portion of wall he had nothing to do with.As Ladd, explained, "Where you were, that was kind of a joke today. Had to be in front of Trump’s wall, but you went to Montezuma, and that’s Obama’s wall.”The Post report adds, "The Cochise County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that the barrier next to Thursday’s campaign stop was built during the Obama administration. The Trump campaign and [ Border Patrol union leader Paul] Perez did not respond to questions about the discrepancy."The report adds that during the photo-op, "Perez called the standing fence 'Trump wall' and the idle parts 'Kamala wall.'""The reality on the ground was not as straightforward as the “Build the Wall” chant that electrified his campaign eight years ago suggested. His vow to finish the wall, now formalized in the Republican Party platform, highlights the uncomfortable fact that he did not finish it in his first term, and Mexico did not pay for it, as he once promised it would," the Post is reporting. You can read more here.
